"What time should I go?" is one of the first practical questions that comes up once you have picked a shop. There is no single citywide answer — a gay massage studio in Shinjuku and an outcall service in Osaka can run on completely different clocks. So instead of guessing from general assumptions about nightlife, we went back through the operating hours of all 40 shops in our directory and looked at what they actually say.
What "open" looks like across 40 shops
Published hours fall into a few clear patterns once you line up all 40 listings.

The remaining shops sit in between — regular afternoon-to-evening hours that do not fall into either extreme, so we have not broken them out separately.
One thing worth keeping in mind while you read those numbers: all 40 shops in our directory offer outcall — 28 do both in-house and outcall, and 12 are outcall-only with no location to walk into at all. For an outcall booking, the "hours" a shop publishes are really a booking window, not a shop you can turn up at. That matters for timing because a shop that says it is "open" until 5:00 is telling you when it can still dispatch someone, not when a door is unlocked.
Real examples, in the shops' own words
Numbers are easier to plan around than categories, so here are three shops from our directory with published hours at very different points on the clock.

Line these three up and you can see the realistic range: Masotera closes at a fairly ordinary 22:00, Dolphin Osaka runs almost around the clock and stays open every day of the year, and TOKYO KIDS does not even start until midday but keeps going until 5:00 the next morning. If your flight lands in the afternoon and you want an early session before dinner, a shop with a morning start like Masotera is realistic. If you are still out at 2 a.m. after a late night, a shop built around that window, like TOKYO KIDS, is the one to check first.
Later can mean more expensive, not just harder to book
Timing is not only about whether a shop is open — at some shops it also changes what you pay. Dolphin Osaka publishes this directly: sessions booked after 23:30 carry a ¥2,000 surcharge, and that rises to ¥4,000 after 24:30. We are not aware of every shop's surcharge policy, since most do not publish one at all, but where a shop is transparent enough to state it, the pattern is the same — the later you book, the more the same session tends to cost.

The 15 shops that do not publish hours at all
More than a third of the shops we checked — 15 of 40 — do not state their operating hours anywhere public. That is not automatically a red flag; some businesses in this space simply do not build a public schedule into their site or handle it case by case. But it does mean you cannot assume a window and just show up, or plan a late booking around a shop's stated closing time, because there isn't one.
The fix is straightforward: ask before you plan around it. 32 of the 40 shops in our directory show at least some sign of English support, and every one of the 40 takes bookings through its own official site, so the same channel you would use to ask about price works for asking about hours. Long holiday stretches are the one thing we cannot verify for you
Like many businesses in Japan, some shops in our directory may run reduced hours or close entirely around major nationwide holiday periods — that is a general pattern across the country, not something specific to this industry. We have not verified individual holiday schedules for the 40 shops here, so treat every set of hours in this article, and on each shop's own listing, as the normal-week baseline. If your trip lands during a holiday stretch, the safest move is the same one as for the 15 shops with no published hours: confirm directly before you build your evening around it.
Booking ahead matters more at appointment-based shops
Not every shop runs on a walk-in or same-night basis. If there is a specific person or a specific evening you have your heart set on, booking that slot as soon as your itinerary is fixed is a better strategy than waiting until you land.
Putting it together
A few short rules cover most of what the hours data above tells you:
- Free after midnight or landing late? Start with the 8 shops that stay open into the early morning, and remember that outcall shops can often still dispatch someone even after a physical shop would be closed.
- Trying to keep the cost down? Book earlier in the evening. Where a late-night surcharge exists, it only applies after a set hour — being ahead of that hour is the cheapest version of the same booking.
- Shop's hours are not listed? Message through their official site or, where available, LINE, and ask for a specific date and time rather than a general schedule.
- Traveling over a major holiday period? Confirm directly — do not assume the hours on this page or on any listing hold over a holiday.
- Have a specific therapist or shop in mind, especially an appointment-based one like UTATANE? Lock in the date as soon as your trip is booked, not the day you arrive.
None of this requires guessing at a citywide rhythm. Each shop in our Tokyo and Osaka directory publishes — or, in over a third of cases, simply does not publish — its own hours, and that listing, not a general assumption about Japanese nightlife, is the one worth checking before you plan your evening around it.
