Outcall is the format that sounds simplest on paper. No address to find, no reception to walk into, no bar to sit at first — you book, you wait in your room, someone arrives. For a visitor jet-lagged after a flight or stuck on a schedule that does not line up with anyone's opening hours, that convenience is real.
It is also the category where we came away knowing the least. When we checked the 12 outcall / dispatch shops in our directory alongside the massage studios and urisen houses, dispatch was consistently the one where the basics — a price, a set of hours, a language you could read — were hardest to find before you ever made contact.
What we could actually confirm about 12 shops
Across the 12 outcall shops in our directory:
| What we checked | Outcall shops |
|---|---|
| Publish a price online | 1 of 12 |
| Publish operating hours | 5 of 12 |
| Show some English support | 8 of 12 (67%) |
None of that means the shops are hiding anything unusual for the industry — see our breakdown of why cash and vague pricing are the norm across all 40 listings. It means that if you are the kind of traveller who likes to know the total and the hours before you commit, outcall is the category that asks you to trust the process furthest.
How outcall compares to the other two categories
We checked the same three things — a published starting price, published hours, and any English support — across all three formats in the directory. Outcall comes out lowest on all three.
| Category | Shops checked | Publish a price | Publish hours | English support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gay massage | 18 | 4 of 18 | 13 of 18 | 17 of 18 (94%) |
| Urisen | 10 | 1 of 10 | 6 of 10 | 7 of 10 (70%) |
| Outcall / dispatch | 12 | 1 of 12 | 5 of 12 | 8 of 12 (67%) |
We covered the English-support side of this table in more depth in our guide to the three categories — massage studios have simply invested the most in courting foreign visitors, and outcall the least. What is specific to this article is the hours column. Most massage studios tell you when they are open — 13 of 18. Fewer than half the outcall shops do. That is the gap that actually changes how you plan an evening: with most dispatch services, you cannot tell from the website whether anyone is working at 1am until you ask.
Why dispatch shops tell you the least upfront
We are not going to guess at a reason with any confidence, but one structural difference stands out. A massage studio or a urisen house has a physical location, a fixed menu of course lengths, and a website built to fill an appointment book. An outcall service has none of that scaffolding — no shop floor, no walk-in traffic, often a smaller roster — and in our experience of checking these shops, that seems to line up with pricing and hours being handled case by case rather than published as a fixed menu. It is a plausible explanation, not a confirmed one.
Whatever the cause, the practical effect is the same: you should expect to ask, not read.
Outcall is also the most Tokyo-heavy category
Of the 12 outcall shops in our directory, 8 are in Tokyo. The other four cities have one apiece:
| City | Outcall shops |
|---|---|
| Tokyo | 8 |
| Osaka | 1 |
| Nagoya | 1 |
| Fukuoka | 1 |
| Sapporo | 1 |
If you are based in Tokyo, you have real choice in this category. Outside it, a dispatch booking usually means one specific shop for the whole city rather than a shortlist to compare — worth knowing before you build a night around the assumption that you can pick between a few options.
What to have ready before you call
Because there is no shop to walk into, the burden of getting the logistics right shifts onto you, upfront. At minimum, have your hotel's name written in Japanese and your room number ready before you make contact — a dispatch companion needs to be able to find you, and a text message full of romanised guesswork is a slow way to do that. There is usually a transport fee on top of whatever the base rate turns out to be, so treat any quoted figure as a starting point rather than the total. We go through this in more detail, including how hotel policies tend to vary, in our guide to bringing an escort to your hotel in Japan.
Booking when almost nothing is published
With hours and prices this scarce, the approach that works is the same one we recommend across the site whenever a shop leaves you to ask: don't try to guess the total, ask for it in writing before you commit. Our guide to booking without Japanese has message templates built for exactly this — asking for a total, a start time and a transport fee in a form a shop with no English staff can still answer. For outcall specifically, it is worth confirming the arrival window as well as the price, since 7 of the 12 shops in this category do not publish hours at all, and "tonight" can mean very different things from one dispatch service to the next.
The exception: a shop that shows its work
One outcall shop in our check breaks the pattern completely. An Independence has been operating since 2004, runs a full English-language website, and publishes an actual price list: from ¥12,000 for 40 minutes, up to a full-day rate of ¥72,000, with hours listed as noon to 1am. Of the 12 outcall shops we checked, it is the one where you can work out the total before you ever send a message.
It is worth using as a benchmark even if you end up booking somewhere else. If a figure quoted to you by a different dispatch shop lands well outside that range for a comparable length of time, that is a reasonable moment to ask a follow-up question rather than assume it is standard. A handful of Tokyo dispatch shops, such as TOKYO KIDS, do at least publish their hours — in that case, noon to 5am, year-round — even without a public price, which is a smaller but still useful piece of the picture to have going in.
The trade-off, in short
Outcall buys you convenience — no venue to find, no travel on your part, a booking that fits around your schedule rather than the shop's. What it does not buy you, in the great majority of cases, is a number or a time window you can check in advance. Go in expecting to ask three direct questions — total price, arrival window, transport fee — and get the answer in writing before you give out your room number. Do that, and the category's biggest weakness stops being a risk and just becomes one extra step.
How we checked this. Figures in this article come from a full review of all 40 shops in our directory, including the 12 listed under outcall / dispatch, completed 27 August 2026. Shops change their hours, pricing and booking channels without notice — always confirm current details directly with the shop before you book. Individual listings on this site show each outcall shop's language support, published hours and booking method where available.
