Why Japan's Gay Massage and Escort Scene Runs on Cash (And How Much to Bring)

There is one detail that comes up in every conversation about booking a gay massage, urisen visit or dispatch companion in Japan: nobody is asking for your card. We checked all 40 shops in our directory, across every category and every city we cover, and the answer was the same every time.

Cash is the default everywhere we checked

Zero of the 40 shops we verified treat a card as the default. None of them build their booking flow around a card, so we would not plan a night around the assumption that one will be accepted.

That is not a red flag specific to this industry. Cash remains a normal way to pay for services generally in Japan, and a same-day, in-person, walk-in business is a natural fit for it — no processing fees, no chargebacks, no paper trail either side has to explain later. Treat it as an operating norm to plan around, not a warning sign about the shop.

The harder problem: most shops won't tell you the number either

Cash-only is easy to prepare for once you know it. The bigger practical issue, visible in the same table above, is that 85% of the 40 shops we checked don't publish a price at all — and that rate is not even across categories.

Dispatch and outcall services are the least transparent. Only 1 of 12 dispatch shops publishes a rate online. If you are booking a companion to come to you, plan on the price being something you negotiate or confirm at the point of booking, not something you can look up beforehand.

Urisen shops are relatively the most transparent — 2 of 10 publish, still a minority, but the best odds of the three categories.

Gay massage sits in between at 3 of 18. It is also the category where the shops that do publish tend to be the most detailed about it, which is where most of what we know about real surcharges (below) comes from.

None of this means the other 34 shops are hiding something. It usually just means pricing is handled by asking, not by posting. The practical response is the same one we recommend for booking generally: get the total confirmed in writing before you leave your hotel. Every one of the 40 shops we track has at least an official website, which makes it the most reliable fallback for asking a total in advance. A public LINE account is far rarer (2 of 40), and only a handful list X or a Google Maps messaging option as an alternative. In practice, if a shop hasn't listed LINE, its website contact or booking form is usually your best route to a number in writing before you decide how much cash to carry.

Examples of surcharges actually published

Because so few shops post a price at all, we have very little to go on for what gets added on top once you're past the headline rate. Two shops in our directory are unusually specific about it, and both happen to be in Osaka:

These are two data points, not a national rate card — we can't tell you every shop in Tokyo, Fukuoka or Sapporo follows the same pattern, because most of them simply don't say. What they do show is the shape of a surcharge: time-based (later means more) and location-based (outcall means more), each landing somewhere in the ¥2,000–4,000 range. That is a useful mental model to carry into a booking where the shop hasn't published anything at all — ask specifically whether a late hour or an outcall changes the price, rather than assuming it doesn't.

How much cash to actually bring

Put together, the picture for a visitor is:

1. Start from a baseline for the hour. Our pricing guide (linked above) covers what the transparent shops charge — use it as your starting number rather than guessing.
2. Add a buffer if you're booking late or outcall. Based on the two published examples above, ¥2,000–4,000 on top of the base rate is a reasonable cushion to carry, even if the shop you're booking hasn't said anything about a surcharge.
3. Round up, not down. No shop in our directory defaults to a card, so coming up short mid-booking is not something you can fix with a tap-to-pay. There is also no tipping culture here to add on top — you don't need to pad the number for that — but you do want enough that an unexpected extension or late-hour add-on doesn't leave you counting coins.
4. Get yen before you go out, not on the way. Convenience-store ATMs are common across Japanese cities and generally accept foreign cards, so topping up on the way to the district is usually realistic, but it is one less thing to think about if it is already sorted.

Every shop we verify — in Osaka and everywhere else we cover — runs on cash, and most of them won't tell you the total until you ask. Get yen before you go out, hold a buffer of a few thousand yen beyond your expected rate for anything late or outcall, and confirm the number in writing when you can. None of that is unique to this industry — it's just how a same-day, appointment-based business tends to run here — but it is the part that catches visitors off guard when nobody mentions it first.
